PM dedicates final Western Freight Corridor sections, giving direct rail link to JNPA
On 8 September 2026 in Vadodara, PM Modi dedicated three Western Dedicated Freight Corridor sections covering 326 route km, linking the corridor directly to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, as part of projects worth over Rs 35,000 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 September 2026 dedicated to the nation three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) at an event in Vadodara, Gujarat. The three stretches together cover 326 route kilometres and were built at a cost of more than Rs 20,700 crore. They were part of a larger package of projects worth over Rs 35,000 crore inaugurated or launched that day.
The three sections
- New Sanand (North) – New Makarpura
- New Umbergaon – New Saphale
- New Saphale – New JNPT
With these sections, the freight corridor gets a direct rail connection to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) near Mumbai. According to official descriptions of the projects, this completes the corridor across its full length.
Why it matters
Dedicated freight corridors are separate tracks meant only for goods trains. Moving freight off the crowded passenger network allows heavier, faster and more predictable cargo movement. The government says the direct link to JNPA will:
- speed up export and import (EXIM) container traffic between the port and industrial hubs in north and west India,
- lower logistics costs for businesses, and
- help decongest Mumbai's suburban and mainline rail network.
Other projects announced the same day
| Project | Details |
|---|---|
| New railway works (foundation stone) | 3 projects, 329 km, over Rs 9,700 crore: Vadodara–Ratlam 3rd and 4th lines, Miyagam Karjan–Choranda–Malsar gauge conversion, Vishwamitri–Dabhoi doubling |
| New rail line | Jobat–Tanda Road line, connecting tribal areas of Alirajpur (MP) to the national network |
| Highways (foundation stone) | 3 NH projects worth about Rs 1,780 crore, including six-laning of the Kamrej–Chalthan section of NH-48 |
| Gujarat state projects | About Rs 2,600 crore, including Vadodara Ring Road Phase II and a 110 MW floating solar project |
A new passenger service between Tanda Road and Vadodara (Pratapnagar) was also flagged off.
What to watch
The next test for the WDFC is traffic volume: how quickly shipping lines and logistics firms move containers to the corridor now that it reaches the port directly.
