First half of 2026-27
In April–September 2026, gross GST collections grew 11.6% to more than ₹12.46 lakh crore. Net collections grew 10.4% to more than ₹10.66 lakh crore.
Reading the data
- Imports drove the growth. GST on imports rose much faster than domestic collections. Import GST rises with the value of imported goods, including when commodity prices are higher.
- Domestic growth was steady. Domestic GST, which reflects business activity within India, grew at about 10%.
- Lower refunds lifted net revenue. Refunds fell 3%, so net collections grew faster than gross collections.
Why it matters
GST is one of the Centre's and states' largest sources of revenue. Strong collections in the first half give the government more room to meet its fiscal targets at a time of high energy prices and global uncertainty. Businesses should note that monthly GST figures are provisional and can be revised later.
Small businesses and consumers can use a GST calculator to work out the tax on a bill.
