Rabi MSP 2027-28: wheat at Rs 2,610 a quintal, safflower gets biggest hike
The Union Cabinet has raised minimum support prices for all six mandated rabi crops for marketing season 2027-28. Wheat goes up by Rs 25 to Rs 2,610 per quintal; safflower rises by Rs 675.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved higher minimum support prices (MSP) for all mandated rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season on 30 September 2026. These prices apply to crops sown this rabi season and procured in 2027.
New MSPs (Rs per quintal)
| Crop | MSP 2026-27 | MSP 2027-28 | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheat | 2,585 | 2,610 | 25 |
| Barley | 2,150 | 2,286 | 136 |
| Gram | 5,875 | 5,958 | 83 |
| Lentil (masur) | 7,000 | 7,390 | 390 |
| Rapeseed & mustard | 6,200 | 6,613 | 413 |
| Safflower | 6,540 | 7,215 | 675 |
Margin over cost
The government said the MSPs follow its policy of fixing support prices at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production. The expected margin over cost is highest for wheat (106%), followed by rapeseed and mustard (96%) and lentil (92%). For gram it is 59%, barley 58% and safflower 50%.
Briefing the media, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the production cost of wheat is Rs 1,264 per quintal, while the MSP has been set at Rs 2,610.
What this means for farmers
- The larger increases for oilseeds and pulses are meant to encourage farmers to diversify away from cereals.
- Wheat received the smallest increase this year, at Rs 25 per quintal.
- MSP is the price at which government agencies buy crops when procurement takes place; actual mandi prices can be higher or lower.
Farmers planning rabi sowing should check local procurement arrangements with their state agriculture department and keep land and bank records updated for registration on state procurement portals.
