India's unemployment rate fell slightly in August 2026, according to the monthly bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in mid-September.

Urban unemployment rate6.8% (6.7% in July)

Rural unemployment was the lowest recorded since January 2026. Urban unemployment edged up marginally. Among men, the rate fell for a third straight month; among women, it fell for a second straight month.

The labour force participation rate (LFPR), which measures the share of people working or looking for work, reached 55.6%, a five-month high and up from 55% in August 2025, as noted in the Finance Ministry's Monthly Economic Review for September.

About the survey

Since January 2025, the PLFS has been producing monthly estimates for rural and urban India using the current weekly status approach, which looks at a person's activity during the seven days before the survey. The August estimates are based on information from 3,70,160 people.

What it means for job seekers

  • A falling unemployment rate in villages often reflects farm and allied work during the kharif season, so it can vary month to month.
  • The urban rate, at 6.8%, remains higher than the rural rate, which matters for graduates looking for city jobs.
  • The Monthly Economic Review also noted that self-employment remains the largest share of work in the unincorporated non-farm sector.
