UPI crosses 800 million daily transactions for the first time in September 2026
UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, NPCI data show. Average daily volume rose to 802 million, a first, even though the monthly total dipped from August.
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) handled 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on 1 October.
The headline numbers
| Metric | September 2026 | August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Transactions | 24.07 billion | 24.51 billion |
| Value | Rs 29.37 lakh crore | Rs 29.82 lakh crore |
| Average daily transactions | 802 million | 791 million |
| Average daily value | Rs 97,913 crore | Rs 96,205 crore |
Why the month dipped but the day rose
Total volume fell about 1.8% from August's record. That is mainly a calendar effect: September has 30 days and August has 31. On a per-day basis, activity actually grew, and average daily transactions crossed 800 million for the first time. Average daily value also hit a new high.
Compared with September 2025, transaction volume grew about 23% and value about 18%. Reports linked part of the momentum to early festive-season spending.
Why it matters
- UPI is the backbone of India's digital public infrastructure for payments, used for everything from small shop purchases to bill payments.
- The steady rise in daily volume shows digital payments are becoming a habit across income groups and smaller towns, not just a big-city trend.
- Higher volumes also put pressure on banks and apps to keep systems reliable during peak festive days.
Tips for users during the festive rush
- Never share your UPI PIN; you need it only to send money, not to receive it.
- Check the payee name before confirming a payment.
- Report fraud quickly through your bank or the national cybercrime helpline 1930.
