PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: rooftop solar subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 explained
PM Surya Ghar gives households a central subsidy for rooftop solar, up to Rs 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more, and aims to provide up to 300 units of free power a month. Eligibility and steps to apply.
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the Centre's scheme to help households install rooftop solar panels. The Union Cabinet approved it with a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore to install rooftop solar for one crore households and provide up to 300 units of free electricity a month.
Subsidy amounts
The central financial assistance (CFA) covers 60% of the system cost for up to 2 kW, and 40% of the additional cost for capacity between 2 and 3 kW. At the benchmark prices announced by the government, this works out to:
| Rooftop solar capacity | Central subsidy |
|---|---|
| 1 kW | Rs 30,000 |
| 2 kW | Rs 60,000 |
| 3 kW or more | Rs 78,000 (capped) |
The subsidy is credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account after installation and inspection. Households can also access collateral-free, low-interest loans, which the government put at around 7% when the scheme was approved, for systems up to 3 kW.
