How to Check Your EPF Balance and Passbook: Portal, UMANG, SMS and Missed Call
EPFO offers four official ways to see your provident fund balance. Here are the exact numbers, steps and conditions, plus a warning about fake callers.
Your Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) account grows every month with contributions from you and your employer. Checking the balance regularly helps you confirm that deposits are actually reaching your account. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) offers four official ways to do this.
Before you begin
You need an activated Universal Account Number (UAN), a mobile number registered with that UAN, and at least one KYC detail (bank account, Aadhaar or PAN) linked to it. You can activate the UAN on the EPFO member portal.
1. EPFO passbook portal
- Visit passbook.epfindia.gov.in.
- Log in with your UAN, password and captcha, and enter the OTP sent to your mobile.
- Select the member ID of the employer you want to view.
- The passbook shows employee share, employer share, pension contribution and interest, month by month. You can also download it as a PDF.
2. UMANG app
- Install the government's UMANG app or open web.umang.gov.in.
- Search for EPFO and choose View Passbook.
- Enter your UAN and the OTP to see the passbook for each member ID.
3. SMS
From your registered mobile, send EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899. Replace ENG with a code such as HIN for Hindi if you want the reply in another supported language. You will receive your last contribution and balance.
4. Missed call
Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number. The call disconnects automatically, and an SMS with your balance details follows. Both the SMS and missed-call services are free.
Quick comparison
| Method | Needs internet | Shows full passbook |

| UMANG | Yes | Yes |
| SMS | No | No, summary only |
| Missed call | No | No, summary only |
Stay safe
EPFO does not call members asking for OTPs, bank details or payments. Do not share your UAN password or OTP with anyone who calls claiming to speed up a withdrawal. Grievances can be filed through the official EPFO website.
Members of some exempted establishments, whose PF is managed by a private trust, may need to check their balance with that trust instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is the EPF missed call service free?
Yes. A missed call to 9966044425 from your UAN-registered mobile is free and the balance arrives by SMS.
Why is my passbook not updated?
Your employer may not have filed the latest contribution yet, or interest for the year may not be credited. Check again later or raise a grievance with EPFO.
