Hampi travel guide: exploring the Vijayanagara ruins in the cool season

Hampi's temples, boulder hills and royal ruins are best explored between October and February. Here is how to reach the UNESCO World Heritage Site and what to see.

Representational image

Hampi, on the banks of the Tungabhadra river in Karnataka, was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire between the 14th and 16th centuries. Its ruins, spread over a landscape of giant granite boulders, were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Best time to visit

October to February is the most comfortable time. Incredible India lists October–November temperatures at about 19–30°C and December–February at about 17–34°C. April and May are very hot, with temperatures up to 39°C, so plan early-morning and late-afternoon sightseeing in any season.

Main sights

  • Virupaksha Temple: A living temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, with a tall gopuram facing Hampi Bazaar.
  • Vijaya Vittala Temple complex: Home to the famous Stone Chariot and the carved musical pillars.
  • Lotus Mahal and Elephant Stables: Part of the Royal Centre, showing a mix of Hindu and Indo-Islamic styles.
  • Hazara Rama Temple: Known for its wall carvings depicting the Ramayana.
  • Hemakuta and Matanga hills: Good viewpoints for sunrise and sunset over the ruins.

The site covers nearly 29 sq km and is broadly divided into the Sacred Centre (temples) and the Royal Centre (palaces and administrative buildings). Plan at least two full days.

How to reach

  • By rail: Hosapete (Hospet) Junction is the nearest station, about 13 km away.
  • By air: Jindal Vijayanagar Airport (about 40 km) is the closest. Hubballi and Bengaluru airports are other options.
  • By road: Hampi is about 340 km from Bengaluru, roughly six to seven hours by road.

Getting around

Hire a bicycle, an e-rickshaw or an auto for the day, or walk between nearby monuments. Carry water, a hat and comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of walking on rocky paths.

Tips

  • Dress modestly and remove footwear at temples.
  • Do not climb on fragile monuments.
  • Some monuments are ticketed; check current fees and timings with the Archaeological Survey of India or Karnataka Tourism before you go.
