A deep depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal made landfall on the north Andhra Pradesh coast between about 11 pm on Wednesday, 23 September, and 1 am on Thursday, 24 September 2026. The system crossed near Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam district, with sustained winds of 55–65 km/h gusting up to 75 km/h, and then moved inland over south interior Odisha.

Where the rain hit hardest

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed several south Odisha districts on red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, including Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Malkangiri. Orange and yellow alerts covered many more districts in Odisha and Jharkhand. Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh recorded about 28 cm of rain, and parts of West Bengal also received heavy showers.

Evacuation and relief

  • Odisha moved 8,082 people out of vulnerable areas in six districts — Koraput, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Nabarangpur and Rayagada.
  • More than 5,000 people were shifted to cyclone shelters in Gajapati district alone because of the risk of landslides.
  • Odisha deployed 33 teams of its disaster response force (ODRAF).
  • In Andhra Pradesh, 5 SDRF and 4 NDRF teams were stationed in Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Srikakulam and Anakapalli districts.

Schools were closed on 25 September in several Odisha districts, including Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Gajapati and Rayagada. Rail services were also hit: a landslide disrupted traffic between Maligura and Chhatariput stations, and some trains were cancelled as a precaution.

Why it matters

Late-monsoon low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal often bring their heaviest rain to the hilly, interior districts of south Odisha, where landslides and flash floods are a bigger risk than wind damage. Evacuating people early, before the rain peaks, has become the standard approach in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

What residents should do

People in affected districts should follow district administration and IMD bulletins, avoid crossing swollen streams and landslide-prone slopes, and check train status before travelling. Fresh alerts are issued on the IMD website and the state emergency channels.
